Who is the picture of the Saint in green that you looked at during class?

What do we know about him?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_James_the_Great

What do you think of his letter?  Are there parts of it that might be controversial?

Review our comparison of James 4:13ff and Deut 30:15ff.  What is life with God?  What are the requirements?  What are the benefits?

Read over the introduction of the letter to James in your Bible.

Read and reflect on James 1-3.  Best students will reflect with comments to this post.

Come ready on Wednesday with an understanding of James 1-4 and Deut 30.

Matthew 16:13-20

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ 14And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ 16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah,* the Son of the living God.’ 17And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter,* and on this rock* I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 20Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was* the Messiah.* <!– 21 –>

Matthew 18:15-20

Reproving Another Who Sins

15 ‘If another member of the church* sins against you,* go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one.* 16But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. 18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.’

For Homework:

1) Research on the web, biblical definitions of binding and loosing.  What do these terms mean?  Choose at least one Church Father, meaning someone from the tradition between the time of Christ and AD 500 and give an example of how that Patristic used either or both of the terms binding and/or loosing.  Write a paragraph of at least 100 words describing your findings.  Make sure you sight your source(s).  Post your findings to my website http://georgelinney.edublogs.org under the New Testament page.  Hint: http://www.newadvent.org/ will help you figure out some possible Church Fathers to explore.

I like the part in the packet that talked about the the title of Hebrews. It said that the original title of Hebrews was “To The Hebrews”. It is said that the refers to the “spiritual Israel”.

Thats not the only thing I found interesting in this section. I also saw how Hebrews is arranged. It said that it is arranged in 3 main sections. But thee section that stands out most to me is section 1.

    1. Christ the image of God, superior to all other human or heavenly beings. (1:5-4:16) I think this is saying that Christ is above all things. That includes priest, phrophets and angels. This links to Hebrews 1:7 that says, “He makes his angels winds, and his servants of fire”

The most inportant word in that I think is his. Now his obviously is refering to Christ. I think that it also refers to ownership. When you own something you dominate that thing which means you are above that thing. For example the N.C Tarhells are dominating college basketball. Therefore they are ranked #1. So by them them dominating they are above everyone else.

  3.   Korey Williams Says:

I agree that Christ is superior because Jesus Christ is saying he is the one and I believe that Jesus was chosen and is the true son of god. Jesus Christ is really superior because he is over this world.

  4.   Brendon Harrelson Says:

I agree with Page 378, Earthly copy and Heavenly Reality. I agree because If we dont have a second level then where do we go when we earn a better life by having a good life kind of like a videogame. When you earn somthing you get a better level. I don’t necessarily think that they are copies because nothing is exactly like heaven. so it just a model thats not exact.

  5.   Joshua Boone Says:

I agree with the love commandments because we should always love God.Like first commandment chapter 20 Exodus. We alway love our family and friends. Love should be a law if its acommmandment in the bible.

  6.   Christian Duenas Says:

I agree with page 378. There was a specific section called Christ’s Superiority To All Other Beings. I also believe that Christ is superior to anyone. Nobody is greater than the Lamb of God. All those scriptures in that section supported the title. We should all believe that Christ is above us and that we should worship and thank him for what he did for us.

  8.   Elmer Del Castillo Says:

The section in the packet that I chose was named Christ’s superiority to all other beings on page 378. In this section I believe that Jesus Christ is superior because there is no other being that can match up to his greatness. We could all be just as strong as we would want to be but because Jesus Christ is God’s son or reincarnation then we can never be as strong or superior as him.

  9.   Raejhan Cunningham Says:

On page 377 in the “Authorship and Date”
It says that the book of Hebrews is not a letter but a elaborate sermon.
I agree to this statment because the book of Hebrews does not say “Dear,…” in the benning or “sinsrely” at the end. I also agree with this statement because most scholars say that it wasnt written by Paul which decres the chance of it being a letter.

I agree with it because the priest is like the speaker of god.
For the animal we sacrifice it to eat and for money and for payment like God does.
Our tabernacle is the church and Gods which is his second home.

  11.   joshua middleton Says:

Page 379 is the page that I am critically exponding upon. it was about how earth is almost the as in heaven in christianity. Such as the offerings, speakers of the word(priest), and the tabernacle. It also said when heaven and earth will become one.

  12.   Christian Dueñas Says:

I beleive that the ship at sea metaphor is referring to the belivers. A person is the ship and life is the sea. Everyone is lost without God, but once you find him and accept him, he will become your guide to life.
