New Testament

Paul is seen below diligently studying and writing.  He is immersed in his work.  He is filled with passion for his task of spreading the gospel through writing and preaching.  Have you ever felt so passionate about anything?  What passions are driving your work as a student, an athlete, as a young man?

First Letter to the Church at Thessalonica

Paul repeatedly instructs the Thessalonians to be imitators of God.  Why?

Think back to when you were a small child.  What are some of the most obvious behaviors that you imitated?  Who did you imitate?  Do you still imitate that person today?

DARIUS:

I see Jesus being crucified in front of buildings. The Bible is showing you that GOD has a reason for everything he does.  How is this picture conveying that the Bible shows us tht God has a reason for everything he does?  Judas chose to kill himself because he knew that Jesus was about to be killed for no reason. All the people were taunting him, but after his resurrection, they had to pay for what they did.  In Matthew 27:42, the people say that Jesus is the king of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe. This means that they were testing GOD so they paid for murder and testing GOD.  Not sure I understand this comment?

Darius, Judas actually killed himself because he was so ashamed for having betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (Matt 26:14-16, 25; Acts 1:18).  Write out the scripture reference from Matthew 27:42.

MAURICE:

This made me feel sad because this is what Jesus had to do to save our sins.

  • I see the cut on his left side because the soldiers cut him and saw water and blood coming out his side; they said his is the Son of God. How does this say or indicate that he is the Son of God?
  • A tear running on the side on his face
  • some shape in the building
  • the building is going away from Jesus
  • cracks on his chest and arms

Matthew 27:45-51 describes the picture for this assignment.  Need to type out the scripture.

Maurice, why is each bullet point or detail that you pointed out important to you?

CAMERON:

1. What I see in the illustration is the gruesome and ugly looking streets kind of reflecting on (or judging)  the crucifixion of Jesus. The building even seem to be lamenting or weeping for Jesus’ death on the cross.

2. One detail is that the people could be looking through there windows at Jesus getting crucified like the people from Jesus`s time. Another is the blood of Jesus dripping on the community. The gloom that is spread across the community as Jesus dies. It looks as if Jesus is standing over the earth. It looks as if the cross has a smirk on it.

3.Matthew 10:21-22  ” Brother will betray brother to death; and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death”.”When they persecute you in one town flee to the next”.

Cameron, excellent thoughts regarding this urban crucifixion scene.  You really captured the mood of the city and the feeling of the cross.  I want you to add to your post and explore the crown of thorns.  Which verses represent the crown?  Is a crown of thorns, from a tree or a vine, somehow similar to the city or in conflict with the city?  I have some corrections or thoughts above in italics.  Change the words and the italics if you want to use my suggestions.

 CODY

  • I think that the picture is the crucifixion of Jesus. This also made me feel really sad because this is what Jesus went through just for the people on this Earth.
  • One thing that I would like to point out is that he is hanging in a city with alot of people around him so that they can come and laugh at him.
  • The only thing that he is wearing is a piece of cloth to cover his privacy.
  • I also noticed that they put a thorned crown on his head.
  • I noticed that Jesus had a tear coming down the side of his face.
  • Matthew chapter (27:35-36) and when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him.

Cody, excellent reflections.  Along with the scripture you referenced, Matt 27:35-36, consider Matthew 10:21-22  ” Brother will betray brother to death; and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death”.”When they persecute you in one town flee to the next”.  How does this scripture relate to the scene?  Consider the city in the background and “town” in the text above.  Consider how families and loved ones might have looked on from apartment building windows–brothers, fathers, children.  Did they ridicule Jesus?  Did they support and defend him?  Or something else?

WESLEY

  • I think that the picture is truthful and no truthful (what do you mean by no truthful, explain), in my opinion it means that Jesus died for our sins and no matter what he is always with us.
  • My five details are the city, the crown of thorns, the drop of blood on his head, the garment of clothing, and the way his arms are.
  • The city shows me that he is with us even in present day.
  • The crown show how he was a king.
  •  The drop of blood shows how he suffered so that we would not have to suffer.
  •   The garment of clothing is odd because I read that for every good deed we do on earth but jesus only has one (and I know that he is not quite in haven yet) I don’t quite understand this point.  See if you can clear up what you are trying to say.
  • His arms are like wings of a bird.  Consider connecting this image to Matthew 3:16 and/or Genesis 8:6-12.  See if the wings of these birds seem like Jesus’ arms on the cross.

Wesley, excelllent work.  When you point out that the drop of blood shows how he suffered so that we would not have to suffer–this is called Atonement Theory.  This is the idea that Jesus sacrificed himself for our sins or he atoned for our sins.  Very good thinking and writing on this project.

HERBERT

I think that this picture is very emotional and it shows that he (Jesus) suffered for our sins, and it makes me feel sad.  (Mark 15:32) (Luke 23:36-37)

Crown of Thorns-it shows that the crown was puncturing his head.

The town that surrounds him shows that Jesus is sitting there for the people’s entertainment.

A tear running down his cheek.

Gnashes to his body.

One piece of cloth to cover his private parts.

Herbert, good points.  For each point, you need to defend why it is important to you or what it means to you.  The assignment did need to be emailed to me sooner.  Do you have access to email?  My email address is glinney@durhamnativity.org.  Sounds like you were able to get on line so you should have been able to email.
